This is a first class web page for submarines. You should be proud of
yourself.

John Paraday   03/Feb/2002:23:06:12
I was to understand that my Father Lloyd Paraday was on this ship
during his "Navy Days" he was a cook PFC something I`m not sure. anyway
he was in the navy during the Korean conflict I think he got out about
1960 or so

James Rabalais   08/Nov/2001:07:49:56
Qualified on Bluegill in 1963 as an EN2(SS)

Dale Slinglend   09/Oct/2001:06:04:30
I was on the Bluegill from 6-57 to 9-59. The two pictures of us
in Townsville Australia and the one were returned back to Pearl. It was
good to see them.

Charles E. Dick, QMC   05/Oct/2001:08:10:53
I served aboard from July 1965 to July 1967. The ship and crew were
great.

Charles R. Cremeens   22/Sep/2001:02:04:13
I was a sonarman (SO2 SS) from 12/54 until 3/58 on Bluegill.

Dieter G. Dauber   09/Sep/2001:03:31:30
I neglected to mention in my previous "guestbook entry" that I served
on the Bluegill from June, 1958 to April, 1961.

Dieter G. Dauber   09/Sep/2001:03:22:07
My most enjoyable -&- memorable tour in the Navy was on the Bluegill.
Also served briefly on Sabalo -&- Carbonero prior to 3+ year assignment
to COMSUBFLOT 7 in Yokosuka, Japan. Completed 10 years of active duty
on USS Ling (AGSS 297) as a Reserve Instructor. Joined Reserves -&-
retired as RMCS(SS) after completing 20 years of active -&- reserve
service. Looking forward to reminiscing with old shipmates!

Chief Dieter Dauber called my attention to this site. Super. Makes me
long for the old diesel scent, notice I said scent not smell. END3SS.

clarence andrews 111   17/Jul/2001:03:55:47
my father en1 clarence (andy) andrews served from 1959 to 1961 i think,
aboard Bluegill. dad is still with us and living in joplin,mo. i
recognized a few photgraphs blevins as one i recognized. blevins was an
excellent cook but i don't remember his rateing. i remember he attended
a few cook outs with my family. i later served regular navy as an hm2
1968 to 1972 but was on the hunley as 31 and never aboard a "boat".
blevins might remember me as bill and a fellow named ski hanslick was a
crewmen aboard 242 i think. i remember roger collins also.

Geoffrey Morse   08/Jun/2001:23:39:25
In 1980 I was living in Hawaii and had not been
told of BLUEGILL's final dive location. Had no
idea. My wife presented me with a surprise dive
trip for my birthday (we were really into scuba
diving). Ended up on a hired dive boat, stopped
at a orange float, and was 'ordered' to follow
the float line down to my birthday gift. There
had just been a storm pass through so the first
20 feet was murky and about 2 feet visibility.
Then I broke through the murk, and it was like
opening a door in a ceiling. There below me
in crystal clear water, lay the BLUEGILL. I went
through an entire 80 tank of air and had to get
another one before going down to the 100 ft level
to perch on the Bridge and get my picture taken.
Regretfully, the USN had been forced to weld all
the access hatches closed because of the flange-heads
that went inside, got confused, and drowned, so no
chance to go below. Shortly after that unbelievable dive
they towed BLUEGILL out to pelagic waters.

I cherish the memorie

SO2 (SS) '64ish. Vietnam run, torpedoed the SEA DEVIL (SS400)
off of San Diego (that was interesting). Great memories, great
crew. Have always since gauged people's abilities by what I experienced
being with the best of the best. Mostly disappointed... No other
team is finer than a submarine crew (DBF)

Ron Rood   28/May/2001:12:19:29
Still looking for Bluegill sailors from the mid '60's. Fifield,
Koivu's (Dennis and Mike), Willy, Fritz Steiner (The Lobster King),
Olie Olson, just to name a few. Can someone remind me what the
captain's name was from '66-'67? CRS is setting in. Must have been
all those "beer" softball games at Ballastic Point after a couple hours
in the EM club. CRS again! Can't remember the officer's name that
taught me how to take pics from the periscope. Did some really great
panoramic shots of the San Diego coast line--not to mention a certain
troller that wanted to play bumper cars with us.

JOHN DEANE   24/Apr/2001:08:55:30
Great Job. Am a plank owner of the intial commissioning crew on Nov.
11, 1943 at the Sub Base Groton. Rode her thru the first patrol.

Always keep a Zero Bubble and a Green Board.

I really enjoyed this site. I was an SOC(SS) aboard Bluegill from 1960
until I was commissioned in July 1962. During this time we removed the
BQS-2 sonar as a maintenance burden and replaced it with the AN/SQS-10
Surface Sonar. With the new sonar the Captain could enter 12,000 yards
into the TDC when we noted anoise spoke on the scope. The "dive" in
the Mekong River took about 45 seconds from the surface to the bottom
and back again. We went to Yokosuka to get the lower sonar dome
replaced and to repair some of the bow dome plates. We cruised the
coast of Vietnam taking pictures of Camrahn Bay and Da Nang for later
construction of bases. We also surfaced alongside every fishing boat
we found and bought fish from the locals. This way they could hear
English and report any submarine that didn't look like us. We filled
the Officers shower in the forward battery with the fish and turtles.
The ship's patch was changed in 1961 and the motto was changed to "Nui

I Remember crossing the equator a couple of times once the 180th at
the same time thus becoming Golden Shellbacks. Probably don't allow
those kinds of things anymore. They were good for moral.

Great site.

Gary W. Hinks   13/Mar/2001:06:39:10
To whom it may concern:
I'm a past crew member of the USS Bluegill (SSK 242). I earned
my dolphins on her 28 October 1963 as an RMSN. She was home ported
in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. I remained aboard her through her shipyard
overhaul in Mare Island, CA. Fond memories. To all my past shipmates
where ever you may be, fair winds and following seas.

Served on Bluegill Jul 1953 - May 1954. EN-2. My first and only

down Mariana Straits.

Terral Gray   28/Feb/2001:01:50:30
I served aboard the Bluegill from about May 1960 till May 1963,
qualifying in early 1961 at Pearl Harbor. I was a sonarman 2nd class
while on board and made the trip to Saigon. Also made the trip north
during the Cuban Missile crisis. And enjoyed the trip to Mazatlan,
Mexico. I was on shore patrol their, and "scouted" the city with a
local english speaking policeman. He drew me a map to post of all
the "off limits" clubs, which was a great help for the crew to find
their way around. Do any of you remember doing the "Limbo" their and
meeting Jack Elam, the actor? We had a great time!

Howard Loomis   27/Feb/2001:03:01:58

Alcopulco, the Portland Rose Festival and even Catalina. This is my
first time on the Sub sight and I'll be glad to here from any one. I'll
make a home page soon. I have some good crew pictures.

Have a good one

I served on Old Blue from 11/60 to 9/62. Roger Collins who told some
stories and supplied some pictures was on the boat at the same time.
Would love to chat with some other folks who served during the same
time.

Ed Moore   19/Dec/2000:03:28:24
Thanks for letting me visit. My Dad is a retired submarine vet from
WW11. I do a lot of searching for him. He served on 7 boats and I have
been able to locate shipmates from all except 2. The Halibut SS-232
during Sept. 43-July 44, and Carbonero SS-337 from APr 45 -Oct 45.

Harold Buck Cline   25/Nov/2000:13:34:23
My kids got such a kick out of that picture of me. They can't believe
I was ever that small.

I tried to get into the com center but it wanted a security code. I
hope you don't mean I have to remember a code from back then.

Also, in the picture that I'm in on the swim call to Australia the guy
to my left (the one on the right in the picture) I believe his name is
Willard Swiger.

Andrew Ziegler   18/Nov/2000:06:36:50
I served on her from 6/53 till 1/55. I was an IC2-SS. It was great
reviewing this web page. It brought back many fond memories.

Harold Buck Cline   17/Nov/2000:09:37:30
In the picture of the tree guys standing side by side with there arms
over each others shoulders during swim call I am the one in the
middle. I am trying to remember the other guys names. Will e-mail you

I was on the Bluegill '65-'66 as a QM and my brother Richard "Butch"
Rood, EN(SS) was on board late '66 and remained aboard after my
transfer to the USS Archerfish AGSS 311.

It would be great to hear from anyone from my stent on the Bluegill.
Including the captain who managed to lift me through the overhead in
the conning tower with the attach scope handles during a practive
shooting run.

Roger 'Huey' Long   04/Sep/2000:20:41:56
I came on the Bluegill after being booted off the Sargo, SSN 583 in
1960. I was a quartermaster striker. I was eventually kicked out of
the Navy because of my alcoholism. I loved the Submarine life and
think fondly of my time on Sargo and Bluegill.

Roger R. Collins   01/Sep/2000:21:30:21
Served aboard the Bluegill from March 1958-mid 1961. Began as an ENFN
in the Forward Engine Room and left as an EN2 in 1961. Of the 20+ years
I served in the Navy and Submarines, my fondest memories were of my
tour on this boat.
